Case Study: Time Warner Cable

Local cable operator realizes a 41% in preventable collisions using the DriveCam program, helping to keep the streets safer for their customers as well as assess liability and exonerate their drivers.

Situation

Time Warner Cable, a pioneer in the cable industry, owns and manages the most advanced cable television operations in the country and serves approximately 12 million subscribers. Time Warner Cable Inc., is a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX).

A local cable operator, Time Warner feels that it has a duty to keep the streets safe for drivers and customers in the community. To reduce accidents, the company has implemented defensive driver training, behind-the-wheel training and a driver awareness program that encourages the public to report positive or negative driving behavior. Time Warner also looks for new solutions to reducing the frequency and severity of preventable driving accidents.

Solution

Time Warner has deployed the DriveCam program that includes exception-based, video event recorders in more than 250 driver-dedicated vehicles in San Diego, as well as additional units in its Houston and Los Angeles operations.
  • Time Warner vehicles download clips daily.
  • Safety supervisors use DriveCam software to review and score driving events, sorting them by vehicle and driver.
  • Recordings are used to provide ongoing driver coaching.
Impact

Time Warner saw almost immediate benefits upon deploying the DriveCam solution.
  • Drivers are more aware of their behaviors and feel protected in the case of an accident.
  • During the first year of using DriveCam's Driver Risk Management, there was a 500% increase in the number of positive call-ins from the public. Subsequent years brought increases of 40% and 34%.
  • Time Warner achieved a 30% reduction in preventable vehicle incidents or crashes, with an additional 11% the following year for a total of 41%.
Time Warner also uses DriveCam recordings to exonerate drivers and reduce insurance payouts. From March to April 2006, Time Warner vehicles in San Diego were involved in six accidents. In almost 70% of the incidents, Time Warner was exonerated after the DriveCam recording was reviewed.

"We were able to see exactly what happened and to show that our driver was not at fault," said Jim Shaw, director of human resources and security, Time Warner Cable, "We were able to protect the driver from litigation and personal liability, and the company from liability on the business side."
