Case Study: Ampco System Parking
A self-insured parking management system adopts safety programs that include DriveCam's Driver Risk Management to provide a higher level of passenger safety while enabling more accurate reserve assessment.
Situation
Ampco System Parking manages and operates more than 1,700 parking lots and garages in 29 states, including parking facilities at or adjacent to such major international airports as Buffalo, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Diego and San Francisco. Ampco is a subsidiary of ABM Industries, one of the largest facility services contractors listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Ampco elects to manage its own risk, and is self-insured to reduce insurance costs. The company faces higher reserves in order to protect fleet assets.
Solution
DriveCam is a central element of Ampco's fleet safety program. The Driver Risk Management gives Ampco a comprehensive method to monitor, track and mitigate risky driving behavior.
- Ampco has deployed exception-based, video event recorders in more than 500 dedicated-driver vehicles at several locations around the country.
- Event recordings are used as part of driver training and provide objective feedback on specific driving behaviors.
Impact
When Ampco began using the DriveCam solution, Ampco was averaging 27 "at fault" collisions per month.
- At fault collisions dropped from 27 to 12 per month within one year. This equals a 56% reduction in at fault collisions.
- DriveCam's Driver Risk Management allowed Ampco to accurately assess and thus, manage reserves.
"In addition to our at fault reduction, we believe that other losses attributed to our shuttle operations have dropped considerably since the inception of the DriveCam program," said Tom Merlino, director of safety, Ampco System Parking. "The impact is not just on lowering property and casualty losses, but on workers' compensation costs."
