DriveCam Commits to Reducing Teen Driving Accidents

Studies show that unsafe driving habits are the cause of most motor vehicle accidents. The National Safety Council reports that motor vehicle accidents are the leading contributor to accidental death and injury both on and off the job. But did you know that motor vehicle accidents are also the leading cause of death for teens in the United States? In fact, motor vehicle accidents are more likely to kill 15-19 year olds than the next four leading causes of death for teens combined.

To this end, DriveCam Inc. and American Family Insurance launched the Teen Safe Driver Program on March 1, 2007, bringing life-saving, behavior-based risk mitigation solutions to families with teen drivers. The companies developed and tested the Teen Safe Driver Program together, and now, American Family Insurance customers in Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin can enroll free of charge at www.teensafedriver.com.

The Teen Safe Driver Program marks a significant step in DriveCam's commitment to predicting and preventing the riskiest driving behaviors on the road - something we've had extensive experience doing in the enterprise market. Pilot programs in Minnesota and Wisconsin demonstrated that teens had a greater than 70 percent reduction in their driving risk score and in near-crash events when their first month of the program was compared to their rate in the following eight months. And feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive.

Parent Sue Jerzewski remarks, "I wasn't really surprised at his mistakes, but the videos gave us the opportunity to talk about what he needed to do to become a safer driver. Also the weekly report card was great as we could gauge his improvement. Initially, he was a bit reluctant to receive feedback/criticism regarding his driving, but as the incidents/events decreased, his attitude greatly improved as I feel he realized he was becoming a better driver because of the program."

DriveCam addresses the confounding issues surrounding teen driving by putting a parent's expectations back in the car. The exception-based capture of risky driving events means that the focus on is on the driver and preventing the collision - finding out why something happened and how to prevent if from occurring again.

Recognizing DriveCam's power to reduce costs and save lives by improving the way people drive, we pledge to be an active force in the effort to combat the epidemic of teen driving.
