National Safety Council (NSC) Recognizes June as National Safety Month

For millions of Americans, the vehicle is a personal office in which to read the newspaper, a vanity to apply makeup and a personal phone booth to talk to old friends.  As harmless as they may seem, the National Safety Council (NSC) reports that these reckless everyday actions create more than 14 million accidents a year.   Full Story >>

One Simple Step to Improving Your Driving
By Del Lisk, Vice President of Safety Services

As June is National Safety Month, it is important to remind your drivers of two basic steps for improving driver behavior.  Each year, rear-end collisions account for about 30 percent of all U.S. traffic collisions.  Almost every one of these two million collisions is a combination of poor awareness and inadequate spacing.

Awareness can improve, but as long as a human is controlling the vehicle, lack of attention will remain an issue.  As our customers will attest, DriveCam is an invaluable asset in identifying and correcting poor awareness behind the wheel before it leads to a serious incident.  Full Story >>

DriveCam is awarded CMAS contract

The State of California Department of General Services (DGS) has awarded DriveCam a California Multiple Award Schedule (CMAS) contract (3-07-70-2414A) through December 31, 2011.  The contract makes it easier for state and local agencies to purchase and deploy DriveCam’s behavior-based risk mitigation solution across fleets.

“We’re proud to have met the DGS requirements for a California Multiple Award Schedule contract and are pleased to facilitate the process for state and local agencies to procure DriveCam’s behavior-based risk mitigation solution and services,” said David Blackledge, director of government business at DriveCam.

Did You Know...

…that dangerous driving behaviors are being promoted to help improve your car’s fuel economy?  A new trend, known as “hypermiling” is a technique that fuel-conscious drivers are supporting to improve mileage and decrease money spent at the pump.  American Trucking Associations (ATA) defines hypermiling as “an invented term for achieving high fuel economy by several means, including dangerous ones such as driving partly on the right shoulder, over-inflating tires, coasting with the ignition off and drafting behind tractor-trailers.”  Drafting is one practice of hypermiling.  ATA states, “Drafting involves driving a car very close behind a truck to use its reduction of wind resistance to reduce the amount of energy needed to propel the auto.”  Fleet operators and drivers need to be aware of drafting while on the road.  DriveCam doesn’t condone these dangerous practices and supports ATA’s recommendation to remove these “tips” from the World Wide Web.
  • Some “hypermilers” acknowledge that drafting and some of the other recommended methods to increase fuel economy are both dangerous and illegal.
  • People that practice hypermiling tend to drive hybrids.  This increases the chances for injury and death as small and light hybrid vehicles are less able to withstand collision.
  • If drivers are looking to save money, DriveCam has proven to reduce fuel costs five to 10 percent by improving driver behavior safely.  Drivers who practice safe driving are less likely to slam on brakes, less likely to accelerate needlessly and maintain a consistent speed, therefore reducing the need to fill up as often.
