Case Study: DS Waters of America Inc.

DS Waters of America Inc. is a leader in home and water delivery, producing bottled water products throughout the United States under brand names Belmont Springs, Hinckley Springs, Kentwood Springs, Crystal Springs, Sierra Springs, Sparklets and Alhambra.

The company, which employs 5,000 people in more than 30 states and manages a fleet of 3,000 vehicles and drivers, was determined to reduce vehicle accident rates and related claims costs across its entire fleet. DS Waters decided to implement DriveCam’s behavior-based risk mitigation solution in pilot programs at its Belmont, Mass., and Oceanside, Calif., facilities to help combat these issues. After deploying in 62 test vehicles at the two locations, the company experienced reductions in product damage costs and driving complaints, 30 fewer vehicle crashes at its Belmont location, only two accidents in 2006 versus 14 accidents in 2005 in Oceanside, and overall liability losses reduced to $13,200 from $82,100 the previous year.

DS Waters elected to fully outsource its solution to DriveCam, including management, monitoring, clip analysis, coaching and feedback, which enabled the company to focus its personnel on core competencies and is being credited as a major reason the pilot program was so successful. Did You Know...

…that the DriveCam solution can help mitigate recent rising fuel costs? The Department of Energy (DOE) is reporting an 11th straight gain in fuel and gas prices in April. Here are some quick facts on how rising costs are impacting fleet owners in numerous industries:

  • Diesel prices rose for the third straight week in April, the ninth in the past 11 weeks, over which time the price has climbed 46.4 cents, according to DOE.
  • The DOE reports that diesel is now 11.2 cents higher than it was this time last year, while gasoline is 9.3 cents over the price of a year ago.
  • Gasoline has jumped 7.4 cents to $2.876 a gallon, an 11th straight gain the DOE stated.
  • The price of regular gas at the pump has jumped 71.1 cents a gallon.
  • According to fueleconomy.gov, driving aggressively (including braking and sudden acceleration) wastes gas, and every five mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional 20 cents per gallon.
  • DriveCam has proven to reduce fuel costs five to 10 percent by improving driver behavior. Drivers who practice safe driving are less likely to slam on brakes, less likely to accelerate needlessly and maintain a consistent speed, therefore reducing the need to fill up as often.
