Situation

Marine Corps Installation West, a command overseeing six Marine Corps bases and air stations west of the Mississippi, was experiencing a high number of damage incidents to many of its personally owned and General Services Administration (GSA)-leased sedans, pickups and vans. It was difficult to determine if dents, scrapes or prematurely worn brakes and increased tire failures were the result of negligence, another driver's mistake, an unavoidable accident or simply routine wear and tear.

Even more difficult was assigning responsibility for the damages and collecting payment for repairs and penalties incurred at the end of each GSA lease due to a lack of evidence or witness accounts of damage.

Solution

The Marines deployed DriveCam's Driver Risk Management solution in more than 800 vehicles across the Southwest.

• Drivers download information from the exception-based, video event recorder at a designated base location once each week.
• Fleet managers review their drivers' respective events and alert unit commanders if damages are incurred or if risky driving behaviors are identified.
• Recordings are used to collect for damages.
• Identified risky driving behaviors are flagged for follow up driver coaching.

Impact

The Marines saw immediate benefits upon implementing the DriveCam solution:
